What to look for in a Retirement Community

For me, there’s a range of factors people should consider before making a decision.

 

– Location – do you want to stay local and connected to nearby family and friends or shake things up and embark on an adventure interstate?

 

– No. of bedrooms – often a move to a Retirement Community coincides with selling the family home, but how many bedrooms would you like? Do you want to share a bathroom with the grand kids when they visit?

 

– Price – how much can you afford? Do you have enough set aside if your needs change or you or your partner need additional care and assistance in the future?

 

– Friends and neighbours – who can’t you live without? Connection to the community is often overlooked by couples investigating their options, but for me it’s a must, with studies showing connection to the community is directly linked to a sense of belonging.

 

– Continuum of care – if you’re happy and feel supported in a community, the last thing you want is to move when your needs change. That’s why it’s important to research retirement living through the lens of future needs. At Sundale we can provide additional care, meals and assistance in your home, if and when you need it. – Amenity – what’s important to you? Would you like access to a clubhouse? A theatre? A pool? A hobby shed or a library? Is there a golf club or a bowls club nearby? Are there nearby cafés and supermarkets within walking distance? 

 

– Pets – if you’re an animal lover make sure your Retirement Community is pet friendly. It’s also worth investigating the fencing situation before signing on the dotted line, with many free-standing units lacking a backyard fence.
